UK DVD Sales Reach Billion Mark

Thu, 28 Jun 2007

Sales of DVDs in the UK have passed the 1 billion mark since the format launched less than a decade ago, according to the British Video Association.

The "Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring", is officially the bestselling DVD ever in Britian, with nearly 5 million copies sold, while the film’s two sequels - "The Two Towers" and "Return of the King" - also proved DVD hits.

The pair came in second and fourth place respectively in the all-time DVD sales chart, with "Pirates of the Caribbean : The Curse of the Black Pearl" taking third spot and "Shrek 2" completing the top 5 list.

Not suprisingly the DVD one billion mark was reached at a faster rate than the same amount for VHS units. In fact it took VHS sales seven years longer to reach the same landmark.

Lavinia Carey, BVA director general commented: "This landmark achievement shows the strength of DVD as a format and the continuing enthusiasm for DVD by the public."

"The video sector is now looking beyond this moment to the future of home entertainment and the hope that the additional quality that high definition formats will deliver can bring further value, quality and choice to the market place," added Carey.

Despite the continuing increase in DVD sales, the rate of growth is slowly declining as a result of a maturing market, according to the BVA.

In addition, fierce competition has lead to extreme price reductions, which has reduced the overall value of the market.
