LG to launch dual-format HD DVD, Blu-ray player
Thu, 04 Jan 2007
LG Electronics has announced it will be launching the first dual-format high-definition DVD player that will play both warring high-definition DVD formats at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week.
LG was a strong supporter of the Blu-ray format, backed by Sony until it announced early last year it would join the Toshiba-led HD DVD camp as well.
LG's dual-format high-definition disc player will be launched in the United States in early 2007, details, will be released nearer the time, the company said in a statement.
High-capacity DVD discs are needed to store high-definition movies on a single disc. Such movies provide five to six times more picture detail than the standard definition used in normal DVDs .
Blu-ray says it offers higher capacity while HD DVD says it offers a cheaper system which is compatible with the current DVD standard.
LG said in a statement, "It expects its dual-format player will end the confusion and inconvenience of competing high-definition disc formats. It has long been a supporter of the Blu-ray format, backed by Sony, but appears to be straddling both sides now."
NEC announced in November that it had created a chip that was compatible with both Blu-ray and HD DVD, so it's possible that this is what will run the new LG player. The chip is said to cost about the same a single-format chip, ensuring that a hybrid player would still be affordable.
