HD DVD copy protection code hacked

Thu, 18 Jan 2007

The first pirated HD-DVD movie format has found its way on to a pirate file-sharing website for the first time, according to new reports.

Copies of the 2005 science-fiction film Serenity were initially made available through a file-sharing system, and now a handful of movies are available.

The first screenshot appeared on 12 January showing a BitTorrent tracker displaying download information for a 19.6GB copy of sci-fi movie Serenity .

Since then, six other screenshots have been posted on the site showing listings for Batman Begins, The Chronicles of Riddick, Pitch Black, The Mummy, Superman Returns and Miami Vice .

This is the first time a HD-DVD film has been made available for illegal sharing, as the format is supposed to be more secure and harder to crack than a normal DVD .

"We all knew this would happen sooner or later, looks it was 'sooner'," said the TorrentFreak blog.

The copied file is available on a Bittorrent website, the technology website Arstechnica reports, which allows users to share large files by transferring them in small pieces to and from multiple PCs .

HD-DVD is competing with the similar rival format Blu-ray for sales of high-definition film and television discs.
