Christmas horror movie offends religious groups
Fri, 15 Dec 2006
A movie company has angered religious groups by planning to release a horror movie called "Black Christmas" on Christmas Day in the United States .
Christian groups have criticised the remake of cult 1974 Warner Brothers film with the same title, which starred Olivia Hussey and Margot Kidder as sorority sisters stalked by a killer over the Christmas break, because they find the horror movie "offensive".
Joyce Brothers, New York celebrity psychologist and advice columnist said, "It's wrong. No matter what your faith, this is a time for peace and understanding. It's dreadful to do something like this that exploits the ugliest and most negative of human emotions, on a holiday ."
Mathew Staver, founder and chairman of the Liberty Counsel said, "To have a movie that emphasises murder and mayhem at Christmas, a time of celebration and joy around the world seems to be ill founded."
Jennifer Giroux, co-founder of Operation Just Say Merry Christmas, adds, "The use of religious music Silent Night and the nativity set on the front porch in one scene are insensitive to Christians.
"It's not enough to ignore and omit Christmas, but now it has to be offended, insulted and desecrated. Our most sacred holiday, actually a holy day, is being assaulted."
Kiera McCaffrey, of the Catholic League said, "It's not showing any sensitivity to Christians. It's the birth of Our Lord."
But Dimension Films was unmoved. In a statement, the company said, "There is a long tradition of releasing horror movies during the holiday season as counter-programming to the more regular yuletide fare. Black Christmas' is a remake of a classic 1974 horror movie with a big cult following."
The movie will be released on Christmas Day (25 Dec 06) in US cinemas, much to the horror of Christian groups.
